Life’s Little Reminders

Every time I walk in the bathroom it makes me laugh. A playful bathmat that sits in front of the shower. An inanimate object with no purpose other than to catch the water that drips off as I step out of the shower. However, the Get Naked in big white letters against the blue backdrop of the mat makes me smile. Sometimes I get a little chuckle. It is a symbol. A reminder.

Smile is the message on my socks. I run early in the morning and in January it is often cold, dark, and icy. But as I slip these running socks on in the predawn darkness, I smile. One word to set the tone for the run and the day. Smile. It is a symbol. A reminder.

If I Knew is the bold headline I see above the poem pinned to the bulletin board next to my computer. It is a simple poem with a powerful message. I make sure to read it at least once a week, if not more often. It is a symbol. A reminder.

If I knew it would the last time
that I’d see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

For surely there’s always tomorrow
to make up for the oversight,
And we always get a second chance
to make everything right.

There will always be another day
to say our ‘ I Love you’s’,
And certainly there’s another a chance
to say our ‘ Anything I can do’s? ‘

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I’d like say how I love you and
hope we never forget

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone
young or old alike,
And this may be the last chance you get
to hold your loved one’s tight.

So if your waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you’ll always regret the day.

That you didn’t take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss,
And you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today
and whisper in their ear,
That you loved them very much and
you’ll always hold them dear.

Take the time to say ‘ I’m sorry, ‘ ” Please forgive me, ‘
‘ Thank you, ‘ or ” It’s oaky’. And if tomorrow never comes,
you’ll have no regrets about today.

As part of the Life Is Too Short Guy philosophy, I emphasize the principle that little things make a big difference. And one of those little things is symbols and daily reminders. The bathmat, the socks, the poem represent symbols I use each day as a reminder. A reminder of how happy, grateful, and fortunate I am. They add a smile to my day and happiness to my life.

Look for your symbols. Find that quote, poem or smiley face mug and use this tool each day as a reminder of how wonderful life is and how grateful you are to be living the best day ever.
